Clothes: Falsity or a Way of Expressing One’s Personality?

How many of us want to gain respect? Admiration? For people to like us for what we are on the inside?

I’m sure all of you reading this article are cool, decent persons with moral values and courage when needed.

I ask the questions above almost every single day but, for starters, let me answer a question that I’ve been asked many times:

Are or should clothes be everything in life?

My answer is: definitely NO!

Why?

Because clothes are a means, not a purpose.

I know you probably don’t like people that wear very expensive clothes and drive expensive cars. Most of them, when you try to communicate with them, it’s like hitting a wall. It’s as if… they are just empty. It’s like they have this mask that they don’t want to take off. It’s as if there’s a wall between you and them that you can’t jump over in order to get to them… to what they’re really like inside.

Then WHY, why do they hide behind clothes?

Being good at analyzing this ever since I was a kid, I pondered many times about the reasons some people wear extravagant clothes to draw attention and to reject them when they attempt communication. I tried to “simulate” their day-to-day life starting from an old principle:

We live in an universe of type cause-effect. Each thing that happens has some causes behind it that trigger it. The reverse is also true> if you cause two identical events, under similar conditions, you will get similar results.

So I asked myself this question: why do people act annoying? It’s true that it works for some if they don’t abuse being “cocky” but… what about the rest?

I’ve reached the conclusion that those who wear extravagant clothes want to be liked as appreciated as well.

Big revelation, right?

But, since they don’t know HOW to do it (whether because of their parents or their entourage) they just try things. Let’s not forget that each person is programmed to do whatever he or she thinks best from his or her point of view. But it’s hard for most people to see themselves from outside and judge their actions from an objective perspective.

So the cause and effect are different:

Those rich people on TV had rich parents, they were born in a city with bigger opportunities. Maybe thy had certain genetic factors that made their lives easier. This cumulus of factors launched them on their path to success. All they had to do is follow it.

The guy who tries and copies them may dress similar to his idol but then he’s surprised he doesn’t get the same results.

So what went wrong?

To get the same effect, according to the principle I talked about in the beginning of this article, you need to repeat the causes. You need to understand the world you’re living in. If you’re just following the trest, it’s very unlikely that you will achieve that.

Following trends is good up to a point.

These guys who dress expensively have places one or two pieces of the puzzle and they think they’re done.
And they can’t even SEE that their puzzle is incomplete. What’s the use to fiil out the corners of the puzzle if you leave the middle blank?

Does it work being a jerk?

Yes, I’ve done it many times. Guys who are sure of themselves are very attractive to the opposite sex and their stylish clothes accentuate their personality. Just remember that, at some point, you need to open up.

Clothes talk on your behalf only in the beginning. After that, your thinking needs to take over.

Is being generic the solution, then?

No, dressing generic is not the solution. We are unique, we think differently and we should express our personality by our clothes. It’s all right.

Get a person who is dressed generically to tell you his life story. if he’s nice, decent and knows how to tell a story, he will get a thumbs up. Dress him stylish and have him tell the same story. He will get a standing ovation and people will rush to shake his hand.

Why can’t people just look at one’s personality? Why do the let themselves influenced by clothes, money, fancy cars etc?

I will answer this question and, at the same time, I want you to answer it as well in a comment. I think it’s mainly because we’re simply not perfec. Our behavior is a relic of the past, several thousands of years ago. Back then, the more resources a man had the more he could sustain his tribe for longer periods of time.

In our days, the females of certain species of penguins only mate with those males who manage to make the biggest, strongest nest (which is actually made of rocks). The reason is simple: a stronger nest can protect the eggs better against wind, thus increasing their chances of survival.

Are we animals?

I honest opinion is that we are, indeed, to a certain degree. I know a lot of us have big egos and consider ourselves to be smart. But let’s admit that we still have flaws, worries, weaknesses. The more we get to know about each-other and about our nature the faster we can evolve and increase our quality of life.

Ovi, are you telling me that I should wear extravagant clothes and to chase money all my life?

No, I’m not saying that at all. If you asked yourself that question after reading this article it means you only got half of my message. First you need to develop yourself. Then you should try and help others as much as you can. Then you can start wearing stylish clothes, get a nice car or whatever you want but DO IT FOR YOURSELF NOT FOR OTHERS. This is your life to enjoy.

If you end up getting right but continue to be nice to people, they’ll absolutely love and respect you. Rich people should be generous because they need social acceptance and validation just like the rest of us. And you can only get that by being generous and kind.

Why the Outfit is Like a Lego Game

Have you ever had Lego games when you were little? I know I did. I used to buy them all the time. They looked great when I assembled them according to the specs but whenever I tried something new it looked horrible!

I didn’t know why the way in which I assembled it was awesome and they way in which I assembled I was so-and-so.

Last night I realized something: how good a Lego game looks depends on the way in which all the colored pieces match together. If you have experience you can make great Lego games if you have the right pieces but this takes time and practice.

Outfits are the same. The more your eye is formed the better you can choose your custom made suits.

When I was little I used to mix lego pieces of every imaginable color. I was happy when something worked out but this didn’t happen very often. Then I started to do the same with outfits and they were almost as bad as my Lego games!

If we think about it for a minute, the way great designers match colors seems mysterious and complicated. And it’s very normal: us men we’re not used to matching colors (like women are). Besides, even shopping bores us…

I have a good news and a bad news for you.

The good news is that, in time, we can learn to match colors ourselves.

The bad news is that if we don’t learn this we will never be able to put together stylish outfits. And we know how important great custom made suits are.

So, if you want to learn, keep reading.

The most important thing when it comes to matching colors is to check out AS MANY OUTFITS AS POSSIBLE.

Let’s talk about what colors mean in an outfit.

When it comes to style, there’s two types of colors: discreet and predominant. I couldn’t find any better terms to name them so I came up with these two terms which, in my opinion, are pretty clear.

Discreet colors refer to those that that are not too obvious, such as the stripes of a shirt, the color of your watch or that of your tie.

Predominant colors are those that stand out in an outfit, such as the color of your jacket, of your shirt (if you’re not wearing anything on top of it) or that of your sweater.

Most of the times when I talk about colors I’m talking about the predominant ones because that’s where the biggest mistakes are made.

You know that rule that you shouldn’t wear more than three colors at once on you? This refers to predominant colors.

Here’s an example:

Let’s analyse the picture above for a moment. The predominant colors are green and khaki. The discreet colors are red, blue and yellow. So we’ve got five different colors: 2 predominant and 3 that are discreet.

What would this guy look like if he had those 5 colors in equal proportions?

If your answer is “like a parrot” then you’re right.

This is why the distinction between predominant and discreet colors is important.

One thing: if you don’t like the outfit above I don’t blame you. It’s too much color for my taste as well. I wanted you to see how much you can do with color and get a way with it.

Purple Outfits for Men

Question: what does a man do when he FINALLY wants to get something stylish? Answer: he chooses something purple.
It’s true, purple has it all: it stands out but not too much, it’s easy to match with many colors, including the white, black and gray clothes most men already have and… you can find it anywhere in the stores. I can even say some stores have practically colored themselves in purple.

If you want to add some color into your outfits and you don’t know what to choose, go for purple. I’m not going to give you much theory today, I’ll just let the pictures speak for themselves.

… and if you want to add a sports tailored made suit and a tie, you’re on the right track…

… and if you want something more advanced, go for a polo shirt(I have one myself and I can say it suits me very well considering I have dark skin complexion)…

The Gray Suit, Right for Every Occasion

A great suit is like an armor: when you’re wearing it, you’re unstoppable! There is something in the fact that you’re wearing an expensive piece of clothing that skyrockets your belief in yourself.

if you’re not the type who needs to wear a suit daily, you probably don’t wear it in the evening or during the weekends, either. Since you don’t want to spend a lot of money on suits of different kinds and colors, you probably want one that you can wear every once in a while.

Is this you? No problem, then, the gray suit to the rescue!

Many corporations use gray suits (along with navy) to dress their employees. It’s a pretty conservative color but you can still stand out if you know how.

Although many don’t like it because it makes you look older, gray contrasts great with all skin complexities. In other words, YOU CAN’T GO WRONG BY WEARING GRAY.

Since we’re talking contrasts, you MUST keep in mind your skin tone before you make your pick. It’s simple: you’re in one of the following three categories: dark skin, medium skin or fair skin. For instance, Bill Clinton has fair skin, David Beckham has medium skin and Ricky Martin has dark skin.

The idea is this: if you have darker skin you should choose a lighter gray, if you have whiter skin you should go for a darker one. If you have medium skin you can go for either one, just try different shades to see which one is best for you.

Is it fashionable? Who wears gray anymore?

A lot of people weary gray but most men prefer to go for blue when it comes to suits. Here’s a few pictures of celebs wearing gray: Taylor Lautner, Brad Pitt and Chris Brown:

What kind of shirt should I wear with my gray suit?

The  gray suit is very flexible: it works with both white shirts and black shirts and, if you want a colored one, you’re free to experiment with some of the shirts that match (for instance, pink or purple).

Before you start looking for the shirt, decide WHERE you will wear it along with your suit. At work or business meetings? At formal dinners or a wedding? At the theater? If it’s a more casual occasion then you can go for a colored shirt, drop the tie and even unbutton a button or two.

Since you probably already have a few white shirts in your wardrobe, they will match great with your new gray suit…

What about the shoes and the belt?

Again, gray shows us its flexibility. You’re probably way ahead of me thinking that a pair of black shoes and a black belt would go great. Agreed, but black isn’t the only option.
Let’s face it: too many men wear black because they don’t know what else to wear (same goes for women who, when in doubt, they choose the ubiquitous black dress).

Don’t get me wrong, you can look great in a  gray suit and shiny black shoes. But why be afraid of brown?

Brown will show others you have good taste and that you know how to stand out in formal situations. A word of caution, however: go for dark brown when you pick your shoes. Light brown won’t look good with your  gray suit.

What about the tie?

If you’re wearing black belt and shoes, then a tie like the ones in the image above will go great. In fact, go ahead and try out several colors to see which one you like best. (*Tip: Try an orange tie. THis goes very well with gray. Make sure that the two colors have the same shade.)

One of the most appreciated pieces of custom made suits  is, without a doubt, the tuxedo. On formal occasions, a lot of men proudly wear one to show class and style.

Whenever you think about a tux, the first picture that comes to mind is that of a black one. Most people can’t even imagine wearing a tuxedo something else other than black. However, this very elegant piece of clothing comes in other colors and nuances. Gray is one of them.

Gray tuxedos were popular in the 80s, just like the baby blue ones were in the 70s. In the 90s, black tuxedos custom made suits took over and have been the preferred choice for most men ever since.

However, gray tuxedos are still worn – just not that much. This means that, at a formal event, you can stand out by wearing one. Don’t be afraid that you won’t be fashionable. Style is much more important than fashion.

Gray is a balanced color in many ways. First of all, it is classy. Second of all, it stands out. Third, it makes you look older, which can be desirable for some men. I can come up with other reasons why you should go for gray tuxedos , I’ll just show you a picture of a gray tux.

So my final answer is: yes, gray tuxedos are very stylish!

Men Clothes Color Matching

One of the things guys ask me all the time is how to match one’s tailored made suit. This question pertains mostly to colors because that’s where us men have the biggest problems.

How can you really stand out from the crowd?

What’s the one thing that will draw women’s eyes upon you? (without effort…)

Give up?

It’s color.

In fact, it’s not color… it’s Color Matching.

When you make a great color combination, you’ll really feel what it’s like to have people admire you.

Think about it:

If you stop wearing t-shirts with big logos on them or socks with sandals, you’re on the right track.

If you take good care of your personal hygiene, you’ll save yourself from embarrassing moments… But it won’t get you any attention.

If you start wearing a nice shirt or a tie, you’ll look good but you still won’t hit a home run.

BUT, if you wear a great color combination… that’s another story, isn’t it?

Remember these 2 Rules Forever and Ever

Analogous colors go well together only when they have the same level of intensity.

Complimentary colors create high contrasts. Be careful which ones you wear because some shades don’t go very well with one another. In general, complimentary colors go well together. Just make sure you avoid the red and green combination. You don’t want to look like an elf…

When you start to actually match your clothes, you need a lot more rules than the two above. Color intensity, luminosity and the colors’ shades need to be taken into consideration. However that’s not something you need to learn by heart.

Once you have the fundamentals handled, you need to start looking at stylish tailored made suit to train your eye to feel what works and what doesn’t.

Can You Wear a Suit Jacket With Jeans?

One of the “advanced” questions guys ask is if they can wear a tailored made suit jacket with jeans. For most guys, wearing a suit jacket happens only once or twice a year so, wondering if they can wear the jacket with jeans is… out of their reality. 

What i mean is this: the question is not dumb… It’s a very good question and shows you really want to be stylish.

Let’s begin with a picture of a guy in jeans and a suit jacket:

I know what you’re thinking: it looks like the perfect blend of formal and casual.

Nonsense!

This is plain wrong. The suit is sacred. The suit jacket is supposed to be worn together with the dress pants and there’s no way around that.

It’s commonly accepted that, if you want to stand out in a suit, you should play around with the model, the lapels, the shirt, tie or pocket square.
If you want to “borrow” from the suit’s “formality”… go for a sports jacket.

Sports jackets are made to be worn in casual situations (including jeans). The have a more casual air but still score plenty of points when it comes to you being classy.

Much better, right?

Now, if you come back to the first picture and look at the black tailored made suit jacket…

do you notice the “disconnect”? The suit jacket looks just too… formal compared to the jeans.

So, remember this rule: a suit is a suit and you don’t want to wear it’s dress pants and jacket separately.
